Oregon-based sports accessories major Nike Inc has bagged the official kit
sponsorship for the Indian cricket team for five years.
Outbidding Adidas and Reebok by quoting the tender at Rs 196.66 crore, the
company will now sponspor Team India from 2006 to 2010.
"With this, BCCI has become the world's most valued brand in sponsorship
revenues," said Lalit Modi, BCCI Vice President. He was speaking to reporters
after the marketing committee meeting to finalise the sponsor.
The contract entitles Nike to get branding on the non-leading arm of the
player's outfit and makes it the official licencee for apparel merchandise for
the BCCI.
"It is a landmark deal for BCCI and through this the fans of the Indian team
around the world can get original apparels manufactured and distributed through
the global network of Nike," Modi said.
The team will be wearing Nike apparel during the Pakistan tour, which is two
weeks away.
With Friday's deal, BCCI has overtaken Italian football team Juventus to become
the top brand worldwide as valued by sponsors, Modi said.
BCCI has been valued at $27.12 million, while Juventus has now slipped to the
second place with value of $22.2 million.
Earlier this month, Air Sahara had got the sponsorship for displaying its logo
on the chest and the leading arm of the players' shirts during their outings in
India and abroad.
Air Sahara bagged the sponsorship by bidding Rs 313 crore for a four-year
contract, beating telecom majors Idea and Reliance Infocomm. Modi said BCCI
would further invite bids in various categories, but did not divulge details.
Sources said separate tenders would be floated for official media partner,
official airline and official hospitality partner.
