Pathan happy with Zaheer's inclusion PDF Print E-mail

Irfan Pathan praised his left arm partner for his good performaces in the Ranji trophy matches which led to this comeback to the Indian team.

In a chat with the media Pathan said that he had learnt a lot from Zaheer Khan and was happy that he was included in the team.

When the newspersons asked him again if he considers himself to be an allrounder, to that Pathan replied as usual saying "Presently, I am working more seriously on my bowling rather than batting".

This has been his reply all along throughout his career, so it does not come as a suprise.

On asking him about his promotion to Grade-A in the new contracts renewed by the BCCI, "But to be very honest, it is not important as all this comes naturally if you play well", replied Pathan.

Ganguly, Kumble, Sehwag and Parthiv Patel will join the team on Jaunary 7 after participating in the next round of Ranji matches starting Jan 3. The decision was approved by the team management and Top BCCI officials as the need was felt for these players to get some valuable match practice before the tough tour.

Ganguly confirmed his availibility for his team Bengal for their match against Tamil Nadu. The CAB has decided to name him captain for that match. Sehwag, Kumble and Parthiv will also turn up for Delhi, Karnataka & Gujarat respectively. They will reach Pakistan in time for the three day warm-up match on Jan 7. The rest of the Indian team is slated to arrive in Lahore on Jan 5.

The chairman of selectors Kiran More had earlier voiced his anger on Ganguly missing out on Bengal's match against Gujarat citing personal reasons. The board then decided to direct him to play the upcoming match against Tamil Nadu.

The BCCI has decided against the decision to ask Sourav Ganguly as to why he did not play in the Ranji trophy matches for West Bengal.

Upon asking the BCCI about their views for this the following was told to the media.

"We are not going to write to anyone seeking explanation. What can we do if he doesn't play," said BCCI Secretary Niranjan Shah.

Ganguly trained hard at the Eden Gardens and also had net sessions at the PGITC.

Sourav Ganguly returned to practice at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, having been selected in the Indian team for the tour of Pakistan.

The former Indian skipper has drawn sharp criticism from the BCCI's chairman of selectors Kiran More, for not turning out for Bengal in the Ranji Trophy match against Gujarat.

Kiran More has reportedly requested BCCI to seek an explanation from the left-hander on the matter.

Ganguly had missed Bengal's last round match against Karnataka as well.

How ganguly came back! PDF Print E-mail

According to a selector, present at Saturday's selection committee meeting in Mumbai, the decision to include Ganguly for the Pakistan tour was not made by the selectors, but the administrators of the Board of Control for Cricket in India.

The five selectors, along with BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah, captain Rahul Dravid and coach Greg Chappell, decided on the Test team. Ganguly received just four votes out of seven, but even then he made it to the team, because the BCCI felt that the left-hander's experience would be vital in Pakistan, said the selector.

Chappell, it is learnt, seemed quite upset with the decision, as were a couple of selectors, but they had no say in the matter.

Not surprisingly. After the meeting, More was bombarded with questions.

On what basis was Ganguly included in the team?

"Ganguly has a lot of experience, he has scored a lot of runs in international cricket. He has the experience we need for a tough tour like Pakistan," More said.

But why was he dropped after the second Test? Wasn't the same criteria applicable when he was axed for the third Test against Sri Lanka? "We have some plans for the team; you don't need to know everything about it," a clueless More replied.

It is also learnt that Sachin Tendulkar had backed Ganguly during his meeting with BCCI president Sharad Pawar on Friday. Tendulkar is believed to have told Pawar that the Bengal left-hander deserves a better deal and another chance to prove himself.
